  • Day 1: Welcome to Lapland & the SnowCastle

Begin your winter adventure at Kemi Airport, where a local representative awaits to greet you and transfer you to the SnowCastle for a memorable overnight experience! This unique hotel — rebuilt each winter using snow and ice — is a source of pride in Kemi, showcasing the expert craftsmanship by the local builders.

The illuminated snow- and ice-sculptures and the fresh air in your room will ensure sweet dreams tonight as you snooze in a thermal sleeping bag on top of a soft bed.

Spend the night at the SnowCastle in Kemi.

  • Day 2: Icebreaker Cruise, Arctic Swim & Northern Lights

Enjoy breakfast in the heated Service point. Around noon you will be taken by bus to Ajos Harbour for a cruise on the Sampo icebreaker ship.

On board the Sampo, enjoy an interesting presentation about icebreaking techniques and the ship’s history followed by a visit to the control room and the huge engine room. You can also see how the Captain commands the vessel in the "bridge". After lunch in the ship's restaurant, it's time for the highlight of this tour: the “arctic swim”! A specially insulated floatation suit will keep you warm and buoyant as you take a dip in the 0-degree water of the Baltic Sea. Before the tour is over, you will also receive an “icebreaking diploma” from the crew.

In the evening, enjoy a guided snowmobile safari into the wilderness for a chance to see the northern lights dancing overhead.*  Later, after a delicious hot beverage and light snack around a campfire, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

Spend the night at a hotel in Kemi.

*Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Two people share one snowmobile and takes turns in driving on the evening tour.

  • Day 3: Train Ride & Leisure Day in Rovaniemi

Today you will board the train for the short ride to Rovaniemi, the hometown of Santa Claus. After checking in to your hotel, enjoy the day exploring this charming town at your leisure.

Rovaniemi is considered the cultural centre of Finnish Lapland, and here you will find varied little shops and cafes as well as the Museum Arktikum, the Lapland Forestry Museum, the Pilke Science Centre, the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland and the Rovaniemi Museum of Art at the Korundi House of Culture.

Spend the night at a hotel in Rovaniemi.

    Train duration: 1.5 hours

  • Day 4: Sami Reindeer Farm & Santa Claus Village

The day’s adventures begin with a guided snowmobile safari to a reindeer farm where you will hear more about reindeer husbandry and the culture and traditions of the Sami, Lapland's native people. Here you can take a reindeer ride and attend a special ceremony of crossing the Arctic Circle -- complete with a diploma for completing the experience!

In the afternoon the trip continues by car to the one and only Santa Claus Village, where you have free time to do some shopping and enjoy lunch, send postcards from Santa Claus’ post office and -- of course -- meet Santa Claus himself. After telling Santa what you want for Christmas you'll be taken back to your hotel.

    Spend another night in Rovaniemi.

Please note that during December, transportation to the reindeer farm may be by car instead of snowmobile but snowmobiles rides will still be part of the day's program.

  • Day 5: Departure from Rovaniemi

After a whirlwind of arctic experiences, it's time to go home and share all those wonderful memories and photos with your loved ones. Enjoy a comfortable transfer to Rovaniemi Airport for your departure flight.

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

We learned so much and experienced unique customs

…Our total experience for all tours was very memorable. We learned so much and experienced unique customs and traditions and the Finns and Sami people were very friendly and informative. This is one experience I did not have on my bucket list, but glad we had the opportunity to experience such a wonderful time. Efficient tour operators from booking to the actual tours themselves made it a wonderful winter holiday experience. Thank you.

Sleep soundly, in the accommodation type of your choice, and wake up ready to enjoy another day of exploration.

About Travelling in Lapland
All of Nordic Visitor’s Lapland travel packages can be considered 'adventure travel' on account of being operated in the Arctic (during sometimes extreme weather conditions) and with the use of live animals for many excursions. As some tours can be physically challenging, we do want to ensure that all of our guests are aware of this and are comfortable engaging in strenuous activities.
Some things to keep in mind:
  • There will likely be snow and ice on the ground, sometimes making it difficult to walk.
  • No luggage handling services are available. You must be prepared and able to carry your own luggage in snowy conditions.
  • Accommodations may seem simple in comparison to what you might be used to in urban centres. Remember, in Lapland the arctic nature is the deluxe experience.
  • WC facilities during excursions may be unheated outhouses without running water.
  • During dog sledding safaris, in which you share the controls of a team of huskies with another person, the person standing and driving the sled will need to kick to assist the dogs and may be required to run when sledding uphill.
  • Reindeer and huskies can run very fast. Those interested in participating in either a reindeer or husky safari should be physically capable of handling a speedy sled ride.
  • Some snowmobile safaris may require you to drive in the dark. And by law, those interested in driving a snowmobile must be able to present a valid driver’s license.
The safety and enjoyment of our travellers is our top priority at Nordic Visitor. We reserve the right to change or cancel departures if we feel that conditions may jeopardize the safety of our customers.
Snowmobile Tours
  • The driver of a snowmobile must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license.
  • Drinking alcohol is not allowed before driving a snowmobile.
  • Children are seated in a sled pulled by the guide's snowmobile during snowmobile safaris.
Northern Lights
The northern lights are a natural phenomenon so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Evening excursions will operate according to the tour schedule, even in unfavourable viewing conditions (e.g., clouds in sky), and our guides will do their utmost to determine the best possible location for sightings.
Activities & Guides
This is a self-guided tour with scheduled guided excursions and activities. All accommodations and included activities and services (as specified in the itinerary) will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor in close co-operation with trusted local suppliers.
You will not have a tour leader for the duration of your time in Lapland, but for each planned excursion you can expect a different qualified guide to lead the way. Keep in mind that you are responsible for making your way to the specified meeting point on time for the start of each excursion. The time between scheduled excursions and activities will be free-time for your own sightseeing and relaxation.
After Booking with Nordic Visitor
After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days (Monday to Friday) by one of our travel consultants who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all of your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday.
Before you travel, Nordic Visitor will provide you with a detailed personal itinerary and vouchers for all services and activities booked for your travel package. You will also be provided with Nordic Visitor’s 24/7 emergency helpline phone number so you can always reach a Nordic Visitor representative during your time in Lapland.
Note: These are activity-filled tours with many details, so it does take us some time to make all the arrangements for a complete travel package. Your dedicated travel consultant will need to book or reserve each included service individually with each supplier and personalize your itinerary accordingly. For this reason, we encourage you to book as far in advance as possible to ensure that your preferred travel dates, ideal accommodations and additional activities are available.
