  • Day 1:  Welcome to Lapland and Northern Lights Snow Shoe Tour

Your aurora extravaganza starts at Kiruna Airport, where you will be greeted by a driver and transferred to your hotel in Kiruna. This evening your guide will take you on a snow shoe walk in the wilderness to several key spots for viewing the northern lights. The pace is flexible, so the tour is suitable for all levels of fitness. You will also enjoy some coffee or tea and a well-earned sandwich before heading back to town.*

Spend the next three nights in the heart of Kiruna.

    * Please note that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon so sights cannot be guaranteed.
    * Please note that the snow shoe excursion is not suitable for children.

Regarding flights to/from Kiruna: Please note that there are no flights to/from Kiruna on December 24th, 25th and 31st. We can however add extra nights to your preferred package if needed.

    Highlights Highlights
  • Day 2: Dog sled Tour & Abisko Sky Station

Your first adventure today is a true Arctic experience—a thrilling dog-sledding tour. After pick up at your hotel, a skilled guide will show you the basics of mushing with your own team of huskies. Two people share one sled and take turns in driving. Then it’s time to leave the kennel and try your new skills out on the wilderness trails! You’ll take turns with another passenger driving the sled through the woods and over the plains. And to give the hardworking dogs and mushers a rest, you will be treated to coffee and a light lunch during a break around an open fire.*

Later, you will be taken to Abisko Mountain Station in Abisko National Park (100 km away) for an unforgettable night of natural beauty and Arctic cuisine. The evening begins with a chair-lift ride up to Aurora Sky Station, where you will enjoy a four-course dinner hopefully accompanied by a sparkling northern lights show (if conditions are right). After dinner, you will learn more about the aurora borealis and how to find these dazzling lights with a guided tour.

Afterwards, you will be returned to your hotel in Kiruna.

    * Please note that the excursion to Aurora Sky Station is not suitable for children.

  • Day 3: The ICEHOTEL & Aurora Snowmobile Safari

Today, you will enjoy a guided tour of the fascinating ICEHOTEL complex, including the original snow-and-ice structure that is rebuilt each winter and a new permanent structure, the ICEHOTEL 365, which offers a year-round winter experience inside thanks to solar energy. You’ll be able to see an assortment of ice rooms and ice suites as well as the chic ICEBAR, ice church and other creative works of ice and snow.

This evening gives you another chance to chase the northern lights—this time by snowmobile! Two people share one snowmobile and take turns in driving.

You’ll also enjoy an authentic Lappish dinner in a wooden hut around a fireplace before your guide returns you to your hotel.

OPTIONAL: Overnight at the THE ICEHOTEL
An overnight at the ICEHOTEL is like living in a fairytale! Snuggle up with your sweetheart on top of soft reindeer skins on a bed made of snow and ice. Regardless of whether you spend the night in the new or original structure, the temperature inside is kept at around - 5°C (21°F) at all times. But no worries! You will receive a thermal sleeping bag to keep you warm and handy tips from ICEHOTEL staff on how to sleep comfortably in your own ice room or suite, on soft reindeer skins atop a bed made of ice. In the morning, wake up to a cup of hot lingonberry juice at your bedside and enjoy a hearty breakfast in the restaurant followed by a refreshing trip to the sauna.

Adventure Packages
All of Nordic Visitor’s Lapland travel packages should be considered adventure travel on account of being operated in the Arctic during sometimes extreme weather conditions and with the use of live animals for many excursions. For this reason, those booking a travel package in Lapland (except for those considered family travel packages) should consider themselves at least moderately physically fit and comfortable engaging in activities that are considered adventurous or strenuous.

Some things to keep in mind:
  • There will be snow and ice on the ground, sometimes making it difficult to walk.
  • No luggage handling services will be available. You must be prepared and able to carry your own luggage in snowy conditions.
  • Accommodations will be simple in comparison to what you’d find in major urban centres.
  • WC facilities encountered during excursions may be unheated outhouses without running water.
  • During husky safaris where you share one team of huskies with another person, the person standing to drive the sled will need to kick to assist the dogs and may be required to run when sledding uphill.
  • Reindeer and huskies run very fast. Those interested in participating in either a reindeer or husky safari should keep this in mind.
  • Some snowmobile safaris may require you to drive in the dark. Those interested in participating in snowmobile safaris should keep this in mind.
  • By law, those interested in driving a snowmobile must be able to present a valid driver’s license.
  • The chair lift ride up to Abisko, even though perfectly safe, can feel a bit scary if you are afraid of heights. If it is a windy evening the chair might also swing a bit.
The safety of our travellers is our top priority at Nordic Visitor. We reserve the right to change or cancel departures if we feel the conditions will jeopardize the safety of our customers.

Snowmobile tours
  • The driver of a snowmobile must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license.
  • Drinking alcohol is not allowed before driving a snowmobile.
  • Children are seated in a sled pulled by the guides snowmobile during snowmobile safaris
Northern Lights
The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Evening excursions will operate according to the tour schedule, even in unfavourable viewing conditions, and our guides will do their utmost to determine the best possible location for sightings.

Activities & Guides
This is a self-guided tour with scheduled guided excursions and activities. All accommodations and included activities and services (as specified in the itinerary) will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor in close co-operation with trusted local suppliers. You will not have a dedicated guide for the duration of your time in Lapland, but can expect a different qualified guide for each planned excursion. You are responsible for making your way to the specified meeting point for the start of each excursion. The time between scheduled excursions and activities will be free-time.

After booking with Nordic Visitor
After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days by one of our travel consultants, who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all of your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday. You will also be provided with Nordic Visitor’s 24/7 emergency helpline phone number where you can always reach a Nordic Visitor representative during your time in Lapland.

Please note: It takes time to make all the arrangements for a complete travel package. For this reason, we encourage our clients to book as far in advance as possible to ensure that your preferred travel dates, accommodation class and additional activities are available.
