  • Day 1:  Arrival in Swedish Lapland and Quest for the Northern Lights

Your adventurous holiday begins at Lapland’s Kiruna Airport where your guide awaits to greet you and escort you to your hotel in Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city located 145 km north of the Arctic Circle. As dusk settles, the guide prepares you for an exciting guided snowmobile trip into the wild to explore Lapland’s amazing Northern Lights*. Two people share one snowmobile and take turns in driving. After a delicious dinner, you head into the night again to return to the hotel.

    * Please note that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and therefore sightings cannot be guaranteed.

  • Day 2: Dog Sledding in the Lapland Wilderness

The first part of the day is free for you to explore this little town and enjoy lunch on your own. Your tour guide meets you around 13:00 and drives you to the kennel in Ojnakka. After a basic lesson at the kennel, you have full control of the reins and the journey begins! Each participant will drive his or her own sled with a team of four dogs, following the guide who will lead the way. The time on sled depends on weather, track condition, and the skills of the guests but we drive a minimum of 25km or more. After “mushing” your way to the campsite later in the afternoon, your hungry canine companions are rewarded for a hard day’s work with a hearty meal while equally hungry sled drivers gather in the cozy cabin for a traditional Lappish dinner together.

Accommodation is in simple cabins without running water and sometimes without electricity. Please note that everyone needs to help out collecting water, chop fire wood and feed the dogs.

  • Day 3: More “Mushing” and Local Cuisine

We start the day by watering the dogs, after which we eat breakfast. We will then pack the sleds with all the necessary equipment and set off on the today’s tour. The second day of your dog sled adventure commences with a 25-35 km ride.* A home-cooked Swedish lunch is provided either outside in the forest or inside a wooden hut and consists of local fare such as reindeer or moose and salmon or char. On arrival back at the camp, we will work together to prepare both the dogs and ourselves for the night. This will include feeding of the dogs, wood chopping and fetching water. Your afternoon is then free to explore Lapland’s spectacular nature until the evening when we end the day with dinner and a sauna.

*Actual distance depends on local weather, track condition and the skills of the guests

  • Day 4: Return to the Kennel and Departure from Kiruna Airport

A satisfying breakfast is served to energize both sled dogs and their drivers for the 30 minutes journey back to the kennel where you bid farewell to your loyal sled dogs. Your tour guide then drives you back to Kiruna followed by a transfer to Kiruna Airport for your departure flight.

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Beyond my expectations!

Thank you so much for being there and helping people to discover those incredible places around the Scandinavia. I've met so many great people and had such a splendid time, that I will never forget. My main purpose was to see the Northen Lights, but I've got so much more and everything was just beyond my expectations!  I would like to thank our Nordic Visitor agent Jennie Elofsson for a great assistance, she's been very helpful and super quick giving us all the answers we need.  Also I would like to thank our amazing guides, who made our tour so very special and intimate: Emil and Jenny.

Sleep soundly, in the accommodation type of your choice, and wake up ready to enjoy another day of exploration.

Adventure Packages
All of Nordic Visitor’s Lapland travel packages should be considered adventure travel on account of being operated in the Arctic during sometimes extreme weather conditions and with the use of live animals for many excursions. For this reason, those booking a travel package in Lapland (except for those considered family travel packages) should consider themselves at least moderately physically fit and comfortable engaging in activities that are considered adventurous or strenuous.
Some things to keep in mind:
  • There will be snow and ice on the ground, sometimes making it difficult to walk.
  • No luggage handling services will be available. You must be prepared and able to carry your own luggage in snowy conditions.
  • Accommodations will be simple in comparison to what you’d find in major urban centres.
  • WC facilities encountered during excursions may be unheated outhouses without running water.
  • Reindeer and huskies run very fast. Those interested in participating in either a reindeer or husky safari should keep this in mind.
  • During husky safaris where you share one team of huskies with another person, the person standing to drive the sled will need to kick to assist the dogs and may be required to run when sledding uphill.
  • Some snowmobile safaris may require you to drive in the dark. Those interested in participating in snowmobile safaris should keep this in mind.
  • By law, those interested in driving a snowmobile must be able to present a valid driver’s license.
