  • Day 2: Snowmobile adventure to the Icehotel

Now that you‘ve gotten some practice driving a snowmobile, you‘ll go on another thrilling snowmobile ride today — this time to the famous ICEHOTEL in nearby Jukkasjärvi. At the ICEHOTEL you will get to explore the fascinating complex on a self-guided tour. Along with walking through the original snow-and-ice structure that is rebuilt each winter you will also visit the recently built ICEHOTEL 365. This permanent structure offers a year-round indoor winter experience thanks to solar energy. In both structures you’ll be able to see an assortment of ice rooms and ice suites as well as the chic ICEBAR, ice church and other creative works of ice and snow. After the guided tour you will enjoy some coffee, sandwiches and some local delicacies served in a hut around an open fire.

Back in Kiruna, spend the rest of the afternoon and evening as you wish. If you feel up for another adventure tonight, you have the option of joining a guided snowshoe walk — a great way to improve your odds of seeing the northern lights(optional; not included)!

    Spend the night in Kiruna.

    Helpful notes:
    • The ICEHOTEL opens in mid-December. Until then, all tours will be at the ICEHOTEL 365, which is open throughout the year.
    • Two people will share one snowmobile and take turns driving. To drive, you must have a valid driver’s license.
    • Snowshoeing is considered easy, but it does require a good level of fitness. Please note that this optional activity is not suitable for children.

  • Day 3: Dog sledding excursion & Aurora Sky Station

Experience the thrill of dog sledding today with an experienced guide. At the kennel you will learn to drive your own sled and team of huskies and then you’ll follow your guide’s lead on the beautiful snowy trails, through the woods and over the plains. After a good ride, enjoy some coffee and a light lunch in front of a campfire.

In the early evening, you will ride in a minibus to Abisko, about 100 km (60 miles) from Kiruna, for an unforgettable evening of natural beauty and gourmet cuisine. The night begins with a chairlift ride up a mountainside to the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko National Park, offering an unspoilt view of the stars above. At the restaurant, indulge in a delicious, Nordic-inspired 4-course dinner, followed by a guided tour to learn about the spectacular northern lights and how to see them. Afterwards, take a short (900 m) walk to your hotel.

    Helpful notes:

Reviews

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Fantastic experience

We enjoyed all of the elements of our tour but in particular the safari by snowmobile tour which started at Nikkaluokta was fantastic and this was our highlight. We weren't expecting to see as many Moose as we did, the food was delicious and the tour guide was very friendly.

Inside the Artic Circle at Kiruna

We booked through Nordic Visitor and they organised the activities with Kiruna Tourism and we had an amazing trip, meet at the airport -23 C, deck out in clothing which we kept for the 4 days, transported around, good hotel and had great guides who were welcoming, knowledgeable and communicative. Couldn't ask for anything more, Went snow walking, dog sledding, visited Abisko viewing station, Ice hotel and Sami Village.

A more beautiful place would be hard to find

We have just got back home after probably the best holiday we have ever had! Everything was superbly planned and the guys at Kiruna Guidetur were fantastic. In fact everyone we met was friendly and so helpful. The hotels were excellent and the food really great - especially at the Abisko Tourist Station and when we went up to the Aurora Sky Station the girl who did the dinner there was world class, especially when she had to prepare the meal in such cramped conditions,

The activities were wonderful - the snowmobiles, the husky sleds, the horse and sleigh ride, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The Ice Hotel was fantastic too. It is such a magical place - the snow, the clear air - all absolutely wonderful. A more beautiful place would be hard to find. Thank you so much for organising the holiday for us. I have been on the phone this morning urging all my friends to go there!

Tour Information

If you would like to book this tour with an arrival date 4 weeks or less from today, please contact us for assistance.

  • All tour packages in Lapland are subject to availability, so we advise not booking flights until we have confirmed your booking. In the event that accommodations are fully booked on your preferred dates, your travel consultant will be in touch with information about the next available dates.
  • Extra nights can be added on request.
  • In general, our vacation packages in Lapland are child-friendly, but please note that many activities (e.g., snowmobile and dog sled tours) have an age limit of 4 years old. Feel free to contact us for details about prices and information about family-friendly packages.
  • All guided excursions require a minimum of 2 adult participants, though for excursions that already have other confirmed participants we may be able to offer solo travellers a better price.

For more information about travelling in Lapland, such as what to pack and what to expect with the weather, check out our Lapland Travel Guide.

Adventure Packages
All of Nordic Visitor’s Lapland travel packages should be considered adventure travel on account of being operated in the Arctic during sometimes extreme weather conditions and with the use of live animals for many excursions. For this reason, those booking a travel package in Lapland (except for those considered family travel packages) should consider themselves at least moderately physically fit and comfortable engaging in activities that are considered adventurous or strenuous.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Please be advised that in peak winter months, daylight is limited to a few hours — usually between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. However, the light reflecting off the snow can make the days seem brighter.
  • There will be snow and ice on the ground, sometimes making it difficult to walk.
  • No luggage handling services will be available. You must be prepared and able to carry your own luggage in snowy conditions.
  • Accommodations will be simple in comparison to what you’d find in major urban centres.
  • WC facilities encountered during excursions may be unheated outhouses without running water.
  • During husky safaris where you share one team of huskies with another person, the person standing to drive the sled will need to kick to assist the dogs and may be required to run when sledding uphill.
  • Reindeer and huskies can run moderately fast and the terrain may be uneven in some spots, so the sled rides can be bumpy at times.
  • The chairlift at the Aurora Sky Station is like what you might experience at a ski resort, so please dress in your warm clothing and expect the seat to rock a bit in the breeze. Please also note that there is some walking required, about 900 meters one way to/from the Aurora Sky Station.
  • In case of bad weather, you will go to the Aurora Lodge at the STF Abisko Mountain Station instead of Aurora Sky Station and enjoy an alternative northern lights programme with exhibits and films. Please note that there is no refund in this case.

The safety of our travellers is our top priority at Nordic Visitor. We reserve the right to change or cancel departures if we feel the conditions will jeopardize the safety of our customers.

Snowmobile tours

  • By law, those interested in driving a snowmobile must be at least 18 years of age and must be able to present a valid driver’s license for a motorcycle and/or car. The information on the license must be in the Latin alphabet, or the traveller can present a translation of the information in English, by an authorised translator.
  • Drinking alcohol is not allowed before driving a snowmobile.
  • Some snowmobile excursions may require you to drive in the dark. Those interested in participating should keep this in mind.
  • Children are seated in a sled pulled by the guides snowmobile during snowmobile excursions.

Northern Lights
The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Evening excursions will operate according to the tour schedule, even in unfavourable viewing conditions, and our guides will do their utmost to determine the best possible location for sightings.

Activities & Guides
This is a self-guided tour with scheduled English-speaking guided excursions and activities. All accommodations and included activities and services (as specified in the itinerary) will be pre-booked by Nordic Visitor in close co-operation with trusted local suppliers. You will not have a dedicated guide for the duration of your time in Lapland, but can expect a different qualified guide for each planned excursion. You are responsible for making your way to the specified meeting point for the start of each excursion. The time between scheduled excursions and activities will be free-time.

After booking with Nordic Visitor
After booking your package with Nordic Visitor, you will be contacted within two working days by one of our travel consultants, who will serve as your dedicated contact person for all of your travel needs before, during and even after your holiday. Before you travel, Nordic Visitor will provide you with a detailed personal itinerary and vouchers for all services and activities booked for your travel package. You will also be provided with Nordic Visitor’s 24/7 helpline phone number where you can always reach a Nordic Visitor representative during your time in Lapland.
