Kiruna (Sweden)

Feel like you´re at the top of the world at the northernmost city in Sweden

Kiruna is the northernmost city in Sweden with a population of about 23,000. Founded in 1900, it was once a major centre of iron ore extraction and other mining operations. The region has been settled much longer though by the indigenous Sami people, with evidence of at least 6,000 years of settlement.

Today Kiruna is a popular travel destination for nature lovers, especially in wintertime. The city is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, ranging from towering mountains and crystal-clear lakes to ancient boreal forests and vast rivers. And thanks to its location north of the Arctic Circle, Kiruna is a good place to experience shifting seasonal phenomenon such as polar nights and northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer.

Kiruna is perhaps most famous for the ICEHOTEL, which is located in the nearby village of Jukkasjärvi. Other popular activities in the Kiruna region are northern lights excursions, snowmobile rides, dog sledding safaris, reindeer farm visits and snowshoeing.

Other attractions include Kiruna Church, one of Sweden's largest wooden buildings and most popular pre-1950s structures. Built in 1912, the exterior has a gothic revival style while the altar inside depicts an art nouveau style.
